Covid-19 Winter 26 Update
Covid-19 Winter Health Update – Flu & Viruses in Nelson
As the colder months settle in, we naturally spend more time indoors and that’s when viruses tend to spread more easily. Nelson is currently seeing higher levels of Covid-19, flu, and other respiratory infections across the community.
With more people unwell, local health services are under increased pressure and Nelson Family Medicine is no exception. Please note we always try and make your medical appointments as quickly as humanly possible, but please be aware this is a very busy time for all local health services. Remember, taking simple steps to look after yourself and others can make a real difference over the Winter.
Make time to rest, keep warm, stay well hydrated, and don’t ignore symptoms that linger or worsen.
Vaccination Offers Strong Protection Over Winter
Seasonal flu vaccinations and the latest Covid-19 boosters remain one of the best ways to reduce your risk of getting seriously unwell during Winter. Staying protected also helps reduce pressure on our local health services.

News on Covid-19 Variants
It is well know that the latest Covid-19 variant has been named “Nimbus” (NB.1.8.1). As we mentioned previously it’s presence in Aotearoa and the Nelson region has been documented. Here’s what we know about it:
- Nimbus spreads easily but so far isn’t causing more illness than earlier variants
- Covid-19 is still circulating alongside other respiratory viruses
- Health Clinics and hospitals continue to feel the impact especially with the change of season
- Staying informed and taking early action if you feel unwell really does matter
Staying Well Over Winter
During winter, the basics are especially important:
- Vaccination continues to be your first, and best line of defence
- Good hand hygiene and ventilation help reduce the spread of viruses indoors
- Masks are recommended if you’re unwell or around vulnerable people
- Testing: Rapid tests can check for Covid, Flu A & B, and RSV all in one go
- If you’re visiting the clinic with cough, cold, or flu-like symptoms, please wear a mask. This simple gesture helps protect our staff and other patients.
What To Do If You Test Positive for Covid-19
If you test positive for Covid-19:
- Register your result at mycovidrecord.health.nz
- For advice, call 0800 222 478 or reach out to one of our friendly nurses
- Follow the guidance on managing symptoms and accessing support
- Please isolate to reduce the spread. Household contacts no longer need to isolate, but should monitor symptoms
And if someone you know is isolating, a quick check-in or dropping off supplies can really help brighten their day.
